Climate change campaign organisation builds world's first renewably powered polar base

In 2008, polar explorer Robert Swan visited npower renewables and gave a speech on climate change. After meeting Peter Forest, Robert asked him to design and build the world's first polar base to be powered by 100% renewable energy.

In just 9 weeks, Peter scoped, designed, procured, tested and shipped all of the following systems to Antarctica:

  • Drinking water purification

  • Grey and black water processing

  • Twin wind energy systems

  • Twin solar photovoltaic systems

  • Twin battery storage systems

  • Solar thermal water heating system

  • Lighting, heating and cooking

Sadly, at the time of departure, Peter was unable to make the trip, sending his stand-in. During the month they spent in Antarctica, Robert and the team broadcast to hundreds of schools around the world. Thousands of children learned that renewable energy is clean, safe and reliable.

"In 2008, I became the first man in history to live in Antarctica relying only on renewable sources of energy. I trusted Pete to design and deliver the power and water systems and thanks to his expert work I stayed warm!"
